Literary and film tourism can act as a catalyst for regional development by enhancing local cultures and identities. Travel motivated by the desire to visit filming locations or places associated with favourite authors has grown significantly in recent years, alongside the expansion of film commissions worldwide. Given the importance of understanding the relationships between tourism, culture, and regional development, it is essential to reflect on the practices and challenges faced by this growing tourism segment.
In this context, the Centre for Media and Journalism Studies at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) will host the 4th International Conference on Literary and Film Tourism. This academic event is organised in collaboration with CETT Barcelona School of Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomy (Universitat de Barcelona, Spain), the School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism (Universidade do Algarve, Portugal), and the Universidade de Caxias do Sul (Brazil), bringing together researchers and professionals to discuss the latest trends and developments in literary and film tourism.
During this fourth edition of the International Conference on Literary and Film Tourism, various thematic areas will be discussed, such as:
We are pleased to present renowned researchers from around the world, experts in literary and film tourism, as well as territorial development.

2026 Edition: Literary and Film Tourism as a Driver of Territorial Development
The third edition of the International Conference on Film and Literary Tourism, held at the Universidade de Caxias do Sul (Brazil), reinforced its position as a leading international forum for the study of literary and film tourism.
Focusing on narrative tourism as a driver of territorial development, innovation, and internationalisation, the conference brought together researchers, practitioners, and institutions to discuss the strategic role of these tourism typologies in destination transformation.
Over the course of three days, the programme featured keynote lectures, international roundtables, and scientific paper sessions addressing topics such as the regional impacts of literary and film tourism, territorial innovation, and the role of film commissions in tourism development.
The participation of experts from European and Latin American universities helped consolidate a global platform for knowledge exchange and networking.
The event concluded with an immersive cultural experience in the Serra Gaúcha region, highlighting the connection between territory, culture, and storytelling as key elements of tourism differentiation.
This third edition further established the conference as an international platform for research, knowledge transfer, and collaborative initiatives in a rapidly expanding field.
2025 Edition
CETT has once again positioned itself at the forefront of literary and film tourism by co-organizing the second edition of the International Conference on Film and Literary Tourism, held at the Universidade do Algarve. Under the theme Routes, Sustainability and Digital Media, the conference delved into how cultural routes, digital media, and sustainability intersect to reshape narrative tourism. More than 50 researchers from across the globe shared insights ranging from screen tourism to the influence of travel writing on destination expectations. And with the third edition slated for Brazil in 2026, this conference is becoming a must-follow on the international scene.
2024 Edition, Relationship between literature, cinema and tourism
At the 1st International Conference on Literary and Film Tourism, organized by CETT-UB and the University of Algarve, professionals from the fields of literature, film, and tourism gathered to explore how narrative landscapes—whether written or visual—transform territories, create identity, and redefine education and culture. With voices such as Carme Castells, Mireia Munmany, and Stijn Reijnders, the conversation revolved around how an author can forever change the way we perceive a place, what role cinema plays in depicting cities (for better or worse), and how academia can promote strategies that not only celebrate this intangible heritage but also project it to the world.
