Tourism is one of the country's main economic drivers and a key element in building Catalonia's present and future. Recognizing that the future of tourism is a shared challenge requiring training, research, and collaboration among all stakeholders, the CETT organized the Electoral Debate: Present and Future of Tourism in Catalonia, a forum for reflection with representatives of the main political parties with parliamentary representation.

Held in the context of the Catalan Parliament elections of May 12, 2024, the debate provided an opportunity to compare perspectives, identify priorities, and open new avenues for dialogue on the role of tourism in Catalonia's territorial, economic, and social development.

Tourism is one of the country's main economic drivers and a key aspect in defining the city of Barcelona and, by extension, the entire region. At a crucial moment for the sector, a unique opportunity arose to collectively reflect on the tourism model we want to build.

Held in the context of the municipal elections of May 28, 2023, the CETT (Conference of Tourism and Tourism Experts) brought together representatives of the political parties with seats in the City Council, along with professionals, academics, and members of civil society. The debate addressed the current and future challenges of tourism in the Catalan capital from an inclusive perspective that considers all stakeholders and allows progress toward a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient tourism model.

In a context marked by the consequences of Covid-19 and a global economy geared towards sustainability, digitalization, and innovation, the tourism sector faces the challenge of adapting decisively. Digital transformation has become a strategic pillar for companies in the sector to achieve and maintain sustainable competitive advantages.

Aware of this reality, CETT held another edition of its Observatory, where experts from various fields shared their perspectives and knowledge on the challenges and opportunities that digitalization presents for the sector.

During the meeting, the need to invest in training hybrid professional profiles was highlighted. These profiles are capable of integrating technological advancements with the specific characteristics of tourism, from an innovative and entrepreneurial perspective. Digital talent was reaffirmed as one of the fundamental pillars for driving this transformation.

At a time marked by the effects of Covid-19 and the challenges of recovery for the tourism sector, the CETT (Catalan Council of Tourism) held this meeting, bringing together representatives of the main political parties to reflect on the tourism model that Catalonia needs now and in the future.

With over 50 years of commitment to responsible tourism, the CETT promoted this forum for dialogue to foster collaboration among government bodies, businesses, civil society, and industry professionals, highlighting the key role of training and research in this transformation process.

This edition explored how global health influences tourism, especially in urban contexts. At a time of great uncertainty, participants reflected on how to address the challenges posed by health crises from a more resilient and sustainable perspective. Experts from various fields shared ideas on the role of predictive analytics in anticipating future scenarios and improving tourism management.

A tool for evaluating the performance of urban destinations was also presented, with the aim of fostering more informed decision-making. The event highlighted the need to integrate health as a key dimension in tourism planning, encouraging collaboration between disciplines and promoting a transformation of the sector based on innovation and adaptation.

This edition focused on how tourist accommodations in Catalonia are using digital marketing to connect with their customers and improve their competitiveness. Based on the analysis of more than 1,500 establishments, best practices and areas for improvement were identified in aspects such as website usability, social media presence, pricing management, and real-time customer service.

The use of languages ​​and the integration of tools such as booking engines and trust certificates were also evaluated. The study highlighted that, although many accommodations have made progress in their digitalization, significant shortcomings remain, especially in guesthouses and rural tourism establishments. As a result, practical recommendations were offered to enhance online presence, improve user experience, and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the digital environment.

How do politicians envision the future of tourism in Barcelona? This edition opened a space for dialogue between representatives of the main political parties and the academic and professional tourism community. In the midst of the election campaign, proposals were heard on how to manage tourism more sustainably, improve coexistence with residents, and decentralize tourist flows.

The presentations reflected diverse perspectives and priorities, ranging from the need for more participatory governance to the promotion of models that balance the economy, culture, and quality of life. It was a day that allowed participants to understand how politicians interpret tourism and what paths are being considered to build a more livable and attractive city for everyone.

Following the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils and the political events of October 1st, tourism in Catalonia faced a period of uncertainty. This edition aimed to analyze how these events affected the perception of the destination and visitor behavior. Through dialogue among experts, the sector's capacity to adapt to crisis situations, the importance of transparent communication, and resilience as a strategic value were explored.

Far from focusing solely on figures, the discussion revolved around the emotional role of tourism, trust as an engine for recovery, and the need to build narratives that reinforce the destination's image without obscuring its complexity. It was an invitation to consider tourism not only as an economic activity, but as a phenomenon deeply linked to the social and political context.
