The ninth edition of the Tourism Breakfast Talks is here!

In an increasingly uncertain global context, marked by geopolitical tensions, international conflicts and changing economic dynamics, the tourism sector is particularly exposed to external factors that directly affect its evolution.

This Tourism Breakfast Talk will focus on the impact of geopolitics —especially in the Mediterranean region and the Middle East— on tourism activity, aiming to provide a strategic and practical perspective on the current challenges facing the sector.

Through an opening keynote providing international context and a roundtable discussion featuring representatives from key tourism subsectors, the session will address major issues such as:

  • Risks and opportunities arising from global conflicts and tensions
  • The impact on connectivity, source markets and perceptions of safety
  • Strategies that companies and destinations can implement to anticipate changing scenarios

Aimed at tourism executives and professionals, this event seeks to provide not only analysis and context, but also practical insights and decision-making criteria in a complex environment, helping to strengthen the sector’s adaptability and resilience.

  • Impacts, Risks and Business Strategies in an Uncertain Global Context
  • Roundtable discussion with tourism sector representatives reflecting on the effects of geopolitical uncertainty on areas such as air connectivity, source markets, destination management and international business strategy.

Javier Albarracín Corredor

Consultant and university lecturer in geopolitics and international economics

Expert in geopolitics, international economics and scenario analysis in the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA region), with nearly 30 years of experience analysing global economic and political dynamics.

He has held key institutional roles, including 10 years leading Middle East and North Africa markets at ACCIÓ (Catalan Government) and 10 years as Director of Socioeconomic Development at the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed).

He currently works as an international consultant for companies, research centres and economic institutions, and teaches International Relations at Blanquerna – Ramon Llull University, collaborating with several academic institutions. He has also lectured at CETT-UB and regularly contributes as a geopolitical analyst to media such as TV3, Catalunya Ràdio and TVE Catalunya.

President of ACAVE (Corporate Association of Specialized Travel Agencies)

Rafael Serra is the President of ACAVE, the main association representing travel agencies in Catalonia. He has extensive experience in the tourism sector, particularly in outbound markets and international travel products. In his role, he provides expert insight into demand trends, shifts in consumer behavior, and the impact of geopolitical contexts on tourism activity.

Academic Director of the UB Chair of Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomy CETT

PhD in didactic social sciences and heritage at the University of Barcelona. Professor at CETT-UB. He is the academic  director of the UB Chair of Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomy CETT , the first chair of tourism in Barcelona, with the support of the Barcelona City Council. Also, he is co-director of the academic journal Tourism & Heritage Journal. 

His research activity is focused on cultural tourism, ceeative industries and tourism and, particularly on tourism and audiovisual.

  • November 2025. The Blue Economy and Tourism in Catalonia
     

    The eighth edition of the Tourism Breakfasts focused on the blue economy as one of the key strategic pillars for the future of tourism in Catalonia. During the session, participants discussed the potential of the coastline, ports, nautical activities, and marine biodiversity as drivers of tourism, economic development, and sustainability. They emphasized the importance of promoting a tourism model linked to the sea that combines innovation, environmental preservation, and the creation of opportunities for coastal areas. The role of collaboration between government agencies, businesses, and research centers in consolidating a more sustainable and competitive tourism ecosystem was also addressed.

  • July 2025. Major events and tourism in Catalonia

    The seventh edition of the Tourism Breakfasts reflected on the role of major events as drivers of tourism revitalization, international projection, and territorial cohesion in Catalonia. Speakers cited recent events such as the America's Cup Sailing and Manifesta 15 as examples, arguing that the success of these initiatives lies in the collaboration between public institutions, private companies, and civil society. Reference was also made to the potential of gastronomic and technological events to consolidate new tourism segments, as well as to the need to ensure a sustainable approach that is respectful of the region and local communities.

  • December 2024. Tourist Tax in Catalonia: where it goes and who benefits

    The sixth edition: Tourist Tax in Catalonia: Where It Goes and Who Benefits, aimed to reflect on the management, impact, and opportunities offered by the tourist tax as a tool for moving toward a more sustainable and balanced tourism model in Catalonia. Emphasis was placed on the need for transparent management, a fair redistribution of resources, and the use of these funds to improve public services, preserve heritage, and offset the effects of tourism on municipalities.

  • November 2023. Strategic challenges of tourism in Catalonia

    In the fourth debate, they analyzed the challenges facing the tourism sector in Catalonia to promote a responsible, sustainable, innovative, and connected destination.

    With the participation of executives, directors, and institutional leaders from the most representative public-private entities, they addressed crucial and essential topics such as improving mobility and connectivity at both national and international levels, managing tourism seasonality, and professionalizing the sector.

    Additionally, they discussed the image of tourism activity and the challenge of improving it through awareness and educational campaigns that explain the economic and social contribution tourism makes to the city and its citizens.

  • June 2023. Cruise tourism in Catalonia: lights and shadows

    The debate reflected on the growing status of our ports as world leaders in this type of tourism. It also addressed the economic impact and job creation generated by this sector, as well as the promotional opportunities it offers across various local areas and activities. Additionally, it responded to common criticisms such as increased overcrowding in specific locations and the environmental repercussions resulting from the activity.

  • November 2022. Montjuïc, an opportunity to decentralize tourism in Barcelona and attract quality visitors

    The second Tourism Breakfasts was a debate about the future of Montjuïc, highlighting its potential as a green lung, cultural, and sports park in Barcelona.

    The need for a comprehensive vision that connects the mountain with the city was emphasized, transforming it into a large, accessible, and strategic urban park. Initiatives such as promoting major sporting events, boosting cultural facilities, and developing new activities were also mentioned. With the aim of making Montjuïc an international benchmark, the importance of combining culture, nature, and sports for both locals and visitors was highlighted.

  • May 2022. Experiential tourism and sustainable destinations

    The first edition of the Tourism Breakfasts at the Foment headquarters in Barcelona highlighted the importance of inclusive tourism that respects the territory, enhancing culture, gastronomy, sports, and events.

    Emphasis was placed on the economic and employment contribution of the sector, the need for public-private collaboration, and sustainability as a fundamental pillar. Culture was also highlighted as a tourism strategy, along with the importance of offering unique experiences to visitors and the active promotion of quality destinations.

    Finally, it was concluded that smart, responsible, and collaborative tourism must be a key driver of the sector.
