Call for applications: October 2023

Specialize in LGBT tourism!

With the Master's in LGBT Tourism, you will acquire the personal and professional competencies to direct, manage the offer and the tourist attention to the LGBT collective. It is the only Master in LGBT Tourism awarded by the University of Barcelona and the CETT with Barcelona City Council's collaboration.

At CETT-UB, we know the new challenges posed by tourism transformation due to digitalization, sustainability, and incorporating the gender perspective into the sector. The LGBT collective presents specific needs and characteristics in terms of inclusion, safety, communication, and a more significant number of trips or extended stays. Consequently, a new figure is needed to manage businesses' adaptation and destinations to this LGBT tourism demand.

The sector needs new, highly qualified profiles to adapt to this context and generate new business opportunities by promoting good practices.

Join a unique international program

Lead the change of the sector in favor of a new tourism model based on respect and inclusiveness. Our Master's Degree in LGBT Tourism will allow you to:

  • Delve into the essential aspects of the tourism sector linked to the LGBT collective.
  • Develop innovative tourism products aimed at the LGBT collective.
  • Detect new market trends aimed at the LGBT collective.
  • Create inclusive tourism products that recognize diversity and difference.
  • Design creative experiences oriented to the LGBT community.
  • Find more reasons to study LGBT tourism.

The Master is 100% online and in English, which will allow you greater flexibility to organize your time according to your needs. You will attend live sessions without travel, access recorded sessions, and carry out evaluation activities in a more dynamic way. Besides, the program offers you an optional stay at the end of the thematic content. This stay includes visits to leading companies and organizations in tourism focused on the LGBT community.

Un nou Turisme,

Methodolgy and assesment

The Master in LGBT Tourism is conducted 100% online and in English through a sequential modular format. Its learning methodology is based on Just-in-time teaching (JiTT), Self-study, Masterclass and Expert talks, as well as visits to professionals and organizations.

Why LGBT tourism?

Within the Master there is a clear commitment to understanding the community in a global and transversal way. We incorporate the comprehension of all identities and concepts, such as gender performativity, closely related to the positive conception of the term queer.

On the other hand, although gender studies, anthropology or sociology have developed research on the collective using any of the best known acronyms (LGBTI, LGBTQ, and LGBTQ +), if we focus on the field of tourism, there is no specific literature that makes reference to it. It is for all of the above that we have chosen the term LGBT, since, due to the characteristics of the master's degree, we believe that it is a broader term and that more studies are needed from a tourism perspective.

Why study the master's degree in LGBT Tourism?

This Master's is oriented to knowing the most relevant aspects of the diversity of the LGBT collective, their motivations and concerns, and their relationship with the tourism sector. You will also learn factors related to legal and social issues and the rights of this group in the world, and their effects on tourism.

You will study structural elements for sustainable tourism products and experiences to respond to tourism demand and supply needs.

Thus, the program is structured in four modules that will allow you to understand, among others, the concept of identity and the cultural and differential elements of the group.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND SUCCESS

  • You will acquire a 360º vision of the tourism sector: through class content, training activities with organizations, CETT-UB proposals, and projects, teachers, and collaborators who visit the classroom. Course Overview

The Master is structured in four modules:

Foundations
History
LGBT Destinations
Creation of experiences

In the first module, you will learn the conceptual foundations of the gender perspective and the LGBT collective. Therefore, you will work on the concept of identity from an anthropological and historical perspective, the cultural and differential elements of the collective, their rights, and their diversity. Relevant concepts such as the concept of intersectionality will also be addressed.

In the second module, you will deal with topics related to the history of LGBT tourism, the tourism impact of this group, the tourism demand, and its different profiles. Also, you will approach their motivations and behavior from a holistic perspective, discovering those particularities that directly impact tourism.

The third module will introduce you to the relationship between tourism destinations and the LGBT community, where you will analyze the new markets, trends, and, in general, the new LGBT destinations from a territorial, social and cultural perspective. These concepts will allow you to understand the elements of attraction of these destinations and how to enhance them through the design of tourism planning, communication, and marketing actions.

The fourth and last module will allow you to approach tourism experiences oriented to the LGBT community. Thus, you will analyze the LGBT tourism offer formed by accommodation, stores, leisure establishments, sporting events, among others. You will be able to design alternative and innovative proposals that respect the particularities, needs, and, above all, the LGBT collective's rights.

To obtain this Master's degree, students must pass this integrative subject. Thus, the MCP is an instrument to train our students to analyze tourism problems and facts through research methods based on the identification and use of different variables. It is also an assessment tool for the Master's competencies with a globalizing perspective.

The MCP is individual. You will have to carry out your work under the supervision of a professor where you can choose between three typologies:

  • Applied research projects linked to the CETT-UB Research Groups.

The internships are carried out through university-entrepreneur cooperation agreements and are supervised by expert subject professors.
