Tourism Degree with a stay at Michigan State University
This study option allows students to go further and live new experiences during their academic career, enhancing their professional profile in the tourism sector and broadening their knowledge in international hotel business management.
- What is the value of studying abroad for a student?
The main value of an international experience is adding a more practical dimension to all the theoretical learning. Studying abroad strengthens soft skills that are necessary to face the professional world, but are not always developed if you don’t step out of your comfort zone.
Skills related to communication, problem-solving, and teamwork are the main abilities you put into practice. Especially in this sector, and due to globalization, it is increasingly necessary to acquire intercultural competences. In this sense, among the advantages of studying in another country, we also find the personal development of the student, fostering pragmatism, and the ability to solve problems.
- Why did you choose the United States?
I had always wanted to study abroad, and the United States seemed to me the best destination to live the university experience in a completely different way. The perception and culture of “college” in the U.S. is a turning point in the lives of many students. Among the available universities, I picked Michigan State University because they offered an excellent Hospitality Business program, and it is one of the most prestigious universities providing more opportunities within the syllabus. They also have a strong sense of community that stood out in all the comments from both native and international students.
- Regarding your studies, which aspects do you think you will apply the most in the future?
As far as the studies are concerned, the content does not change much, but I would highlight the teaching method. They have a different educational system based on continuous assessment without the need for final exams, which only create pressure for the student and do not reflect the entire learning process. In my case, I was lucky enough to attend conferences such as SHFM, which gave me the opportunity to connect with industry professionals. They also organized several round tables or “focus groups” with General Managers of well-known hotel chains so that we could introduce ourselves in small groups and expand our networking. These events provided us with tools and opportunities for the future.
International experience: a key factor in the job market
- When it comes to finding future jobs, do you think international exchanges put you in a stronger position?
Being part of an academic exchange abroad is both a challenge and an adventure. Students who spend time in another country collect moments, learn new languages, discover new cultures, and leave home to build a new one. Companies value these experiences because those who have lived them are usually people with an open mindset, initiative, and willingness to take risks to enrich themselves as individuals and broaden their horizons both personally and professionally. Studying outside your country of origin expands your perspectives, builds self-confidence, and strengthens your ability to solve problems and take on responsibilities.
- On a personal level, how has the experience of studying so far away from home changed you?
It was a dream I had since childhood. I have always been restless and curious, and I felt it was the right time to take a step forward and leave my comfort zone. Studying, in my case, in the United States allowed me to travel to different states such as Colorado, New York, Michigan, Puerto Rico, Illinois, or Florida, and it has been an unforgettable experience. I have been able to discover new ways of living, build relationships with people from all over the world, strengthen my language skills, and live independently in a new society and culture. During this experience, you mature, get to know yourself better, and bring out sides of yourself you would never discover if you stayed within your comfort zone.
- Would you recommend international stays to other classmates or future students?
It has been the most enriching experience of my life and has helped me grow both personally and professionally. It has given me the chance to embrace a new culture and to develop in an international environment. I have expanded and strengthened my network of contacts with professors, professionals in the sector, and friends. Studying abroad gives you new perspectives, more contacts, and the chance to travel. I would, without a doubt, recommend this experience to anyone who has the opportunity to live it. Whether through Erasmus, for work reasons, or internships, and regardless of the destination, it is an experience that leaves a mark and helps you define yourself.
